UKCLE events guidance
Guidance for speakers
UKCLE events aim to bring people together to discuss and share ideas about legal education. As sessions are usually short and allow only a brief snapshot of the innovations and developments being undertaken, we invite all speakers to submit a full paper to complement and add further detail to their session. Guidelines for speakers at our events are given below.
Author guidelines
The following guidelines should help you format your paper:
- paper length – 2,000-4,000 words
- if your paper includes graphics, please send these in a separate file (gif, jpg, tif), rather than embedded in a Word file
- check all statements, names and references for accuracy
- set out tables and diagrams clearly and consistently
- spell check and proof read all content
- headings are important to break up the text – please make clear the level of heading
- use Harvard referencing rather than numbered footnotes
- spell out all organisations in full before using an abbreviation
- avoid using jargon – not all delegates will be familiar with terms such as RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) or TFR (Training Framework Review)
- finally, do not spend too long trying to make your material look good on the page, as we will format it according to UKCLE house style.
Your paper should include the following sections:
- title – an explanatory subtitle may be included as appropriate
- byline – author name(s) and institution(s)
- a brief summary (around 75 words) of your paper – this will appear in a summary box at the top of the page
- references and further reading as appropriate in a bibliography at the end of the paper. If there is a weblink to the reference please include this.
- keywords (up to five) reflecting the topic of your paper
Following the conference a reminder will be sent to speakers and all submitted papers will be published on the UKCLE website. Please be aware that if you have not submitted a full paper we will keep your abstract on the site with any necessary adjustments to tense.
Session guidelines
We encourage a friendly and supportive environment at all UKCLE events, with open discussion and exchange of ideas, and are keen to promote interactive sessions.
In general there will be 40 minutes per paper, including time for questions. Each session will have a chair, who will need to adhere strictly to timings.
Copyright
All material submitted must be the original work of the author unless otherwise noted. Permission is given to UKCLE to:
- edit and publish the material
- republish the material, or any part of it, in any future UKCLE publication
